Canon printing issues

Start with the troubleshooting checklist and confirm the Canon model and PostScript controller.

Orientation, grouping, and PostScript/PDF handling

Section titled “Orientation, grouping, and PostScript/PDF handling”

CUPS filters can apply job options incorrectly when orientation and page grouping are combined. The affected configurations include Ubuntu 13.10 with CUPS 1.6.2 and Fedora 19 with CUPS 1.6, particularly Landscape and Group options in the PDF workflow.

For LibreOffice, open the printer properties and set the language type to Postscript (level from driver) rather than PDF so job options are applied through the PostScript workflow.

For the affected Ubuntu 13.04 PostScript workflow, install the local.convs file supplied with BrightQ-Pro and restart CUPS. These commands require administrative privileges and assume the default /usr/local/brightq installation. Restarting CUPS interrupts printing; preserve any existing local MIME configuration before copying the file.

Terminal window
sudo cp /usr/local/brightq/local.convs /usr/share/cups/mime
sudo service cups restart

This workaround restores part of the PostScript workflow for BrightQ queues. It does not resolve the non-PostScript/PDF issues above and is specific to the affected configuration.

Symptom What to check
OpenOffice ignores orientation Set orientation in the document; OpenOffice overrides the BrightQ-Pro setting.
OpenOffice prints the wrong number of copies Select copies in OpenOffice and leave the BrightQ-Pro copies field at 1.
OpenOffice text is truncated or loses formatting The selected font may be absent from the printer. Choose a different document font.
An 11 × 17 job using 2-up is not centered This is a known CUPS layout issue. Check this combination separately when validating output.
A single banner page behaves inconsistently Results depend on the printing system. On some Fiery controllers using CUPS, main-job options can carry over to the banner.

An Envelope Feeder is not discovered automatically when adding a printer. Set installed accessories in the queue configuration and check the model’s Canon_options.txt entries.

If a driver does not provide installable-option configuration for a device, select finishing options that match the hardware actually fitted. Selecting an unavailable option can produce a conflict message. See model and option setup.

  • When a batch of shell-based printer additions fails with messages such as Aborting. add-printer failed, check the CUPS per-host connection limit, MaxClientsPerHost, in cupsd.conf. Review the limit with the CUPS administrator; it protects the server from excessive connections. There is no single replacement value for every installation.
  • With CUPS browsing enabled, queues from other CUPS servers can appear under Other Printers. On CUPS versions that use the Browsing directive, setting Browsing Off and restarting CUPS hides those remote queues. Review the effect on other applications before changing the server’s configuration.
  • If Linux host security policy blocks jobs, inspect the denial and correct the relevant permissions or policy. Keep host security controls enabled while diagnosing the problem.
Platform or symptom Requirement or action
Fedora 18 graphical installer cannot start Install libpng12 before starting the graphical installation.
FreeBSD compatibility libraries are missing Check the package README’s compat4x requirement for FreeBSD 5.0 and later.
HP-UX reports Unresolved symbol: dlopen (code) The libdl core library is required. Obtain the appropriate HP-UX quality pack.
Upgrading BrightQ 1.6.5 on Red Hat Linux 9 or Solaris with CUPS Uninstall 1.6.5 before installing 2.5 to avoid CUPS errors. See upgrade guidance.
